What it is, where it grows, what I picked from it, and what people have made of it besides ink: the food, the medicine, the stories. Then the berries go in the pan. We simmer them and strain them. Then the part I'd call witchcraft if it weren't just the kitchen cupboard. A pinch of one thing, a drop of another, and one tree gives you three or four colours. We bottle them up.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThen there's a sheet of paper. Mine has the swatches along the top and a drawing underneath. Yours can look like that or nothing like it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eYou take home three or four small bottles of ink you made, labelled with the tree and the date. They go on changing in the jar for a few weeks, mostly deeper, and that's part of it. You take the sheet: swatches along the top, whatever you drew underneath. And you take the knowing. Then we come in to tea, cake, and a sheet of paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA mandala is drawn out from the centre, one ring at a time, and none of the lines have to be straight. You don't need to have drawn one before. I'll show you how I start, and what to do when it goes wrong, which is most of what I know.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe compass, the protractor and the pencils are yours to keep. We grind the beans, make a pot, and pour a cup. Then the grounds go in the pan and come out as ink: a warm brown that goes darker the longer you leave it. There's cake with the coffee, and the pot stays on.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThen we draw. Slowly, and nothing has to be finished. If the night before ran late, this is a good way to spend the morning after.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eYou take home a bottle of coffee ink, the pages you drew, and the recipe.
