Joy (Original)

I painted this a few weeks after my miscarriage, on a sunny day in June, after a hospital appointment. We went to a pub with a beer garden and had a meal. There was sunshine and music, the kids were playing, and Miles and I sat still together. We knew where we stood by then, and that we'd be all right.

What it holds is the small things: sun on my face, the sound of life carrying on around us — chatter, music, the breeze in the trees — and someone beside me.

This piece was auctioned for Zephyrs, a charity supporting families who've lost babies and children. I wanted that to be where it went — even after something that hard, there was still joy to be found.
